How Much Does a TMJ Arthroscopy Cost?
By Dr. Tofiq Bohra, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon (TMJ Arthroscopy & Total Joint Replacement), Mumbai
Once patients understand that TMJ arthroscopy is a minimally invasive "keyhole" procedure, their next question is usually about cost. That's a very practical concern, and you deserve a clear answer before you make any decision.
In this article, I'll explain what TMJ arthroscopy typically costs in India, what is included in that cost, what can change the final bill, and how it compares with other TMJ treatments.
What Is TMJ Arthroscopy?
TMJ arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure for the jaw joint. A camera only a few millimetres wide is placed into the joint through a tiny puncture in front of the ear. Through this small access, the surgeon can wash out the joint, release adhesions, free up a displaced disc and treat inflammation, without opening the joint.
Because the incision is so small, recovery is faster and the hospital stay is shorter than with open surgery. That also helps keep the overall cost lower.
TMJ Arthroscopy Cost in India at a Glance
| Treatment | Approx. Cost in India* |
|---|---|
| TMJ arthroscopy, one joint | ₹60,000 – ₹1,50,000 |
| TMJ arthroscopy, both joints | ₹1,20,000 – ₹2,50,000 |
| Arthrocentesis (needle joint wash), for comparison | ₹15,000 – ₹40,000 |
| Open joint surgery, for comparison | ₹1,00,000 – ₹2,50,000 |
| Total TMJ joint replacement, for comparison | ₹3,00,000 – ₹5,00,000 per side |
*These are indicative ranges for metro-city hospitals in India and are meant only as a starting point. An exact estimate can be given only after a clinical examination and imaging.
What Is Included in the Cost?
When a hospital quotes a package for TMJ arthroscopy, it usually covers:
- Surgeon's fee for performing the procedure
- Anaesthesia charges, since the procedure is done under general anaesthesia
- Operation theatre charges, including the arthroscopy equipment
- Disposables and medicines used during the procedure
- Hospital stay, usually day care or one night
Costs that may be separate
- Consultation fees
- MRI or CBCT scans of the jaw joints
- Pre-operative blood tests and fitness check
- Medicines after discharge
- Follow-up visits and jaw physiotherapy
Always ask the hospital what its package includes, so there are no surprises later.
What Affects the Cost of TMJ Arthroscopy?
1. One joint or both joints
Many patients have problems in both jaw joints. Treating both in the same sitting increases theatre time and cost, but is usually more economical than two separate procedures.
2. What needs to be done inside the joint
A simple joint wash and adhesion release costs less than a procedure that involves repositioning the disc or smoothing arthritic joint surfaces.
3. Hospital and city
Costs are higher at large multispeciality hospitals in metro cities. These hospitals also offer advanced imaging, ICU backup and experienced anaesthesia teams.
4. Length of hospital stay
Most arthroscopies are day-care procedures. An overnight stay, or a private room, will increase the bill.
5. Surgeon's training and experience
TMJ arthroscopy is a specialised skill that few surgeons in India perform regularly. A trained surgeon may charge more, but correct patient selection and good technique reduce the chance of needing repeat or bigger surgery later.
Is TMJ Arthroscopy Worth the Cost?
For the right patient, I believe it often is. Compared with open joint surgery, arthroscopy usually means:
- A shorter hospital stay, and therefore lower hospital charges
- Less pain and fewer medicines after surgery
- A quicker return to work, often within a few days to a week
- No large scar
It can also avoid or delay the need for open surgery or joint replacement, which cost considerably more.
That said, arthroscopy is not right for everyone. If medicines, splints and physiotherapy can control your symptoms, you may not need any procedure at all. And if the joint is severely damaged or fused, open surgery may be the better option.
Does Insurance Cover TMJ Arthroscopy?
Many health insurance policies in India cover TMJ arthroscopy when it is medically necessary, for example for a locked jaw, disc displacement or joint inflammation that hasn't improved with other treatment. Coverage for day-care procedures varies between policies, so share your diagnosis and the hospital estimate with your insurer for pre-authorisation before the procedure.
My Advice
Don't decide on cost alone. First get an accurate diagnosis with a clinical examination and MRI. Then ask your surgeon whether arthroscopy is truly the right option for you, what exactly the estimate includes, and what results you can realistically expect.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does TMJ arthroscopy cost in India?
TMJ arthroscopy typically costs around ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000 for one joint, and roughly ₹1,20,000 to ₹2,50,000 when both joints are treated together.
Is TMJ arthroscopy cheaper than open surgery?
Often yes, mainly because of the shorter hospital stay and faster recovery. The exact difference depends on the hospital and what needs to be done inside the joint.
Is TMJ arthroscopy covered by health insurance?
Many policies cover it when it is medically necessary. Day-care coverage varies, so check with your insurer and get pre-authorisation before the procedure.
Are MRI scans included in the TMJ arthroscopy cost?
Usually not. MRI or CBCT scans, consultation fees and pre-operative tests are generally charged separately from the procedure package.
Do I need to stay in hospital after TMJ arthroscopy?
Most patients go home the same day or the next morning, which helps keep the overall cost lower than open surgery.
