Botulinum Toxin is mainly a purified form of toxin produced by Botulinum Clostridium bacteria. The mechanism of action of this toxin is to relax or reduce hyperactivity in facial muscles where it is injected.

Because of this effect, wrinkles and expression lines on the face are significantly reduced, resulting in a smoother and more aesthetic appearance. However, the results are temporary and require multiple sittings for maintenance.

Botulinum Toxin in TMJ Disorders

Botulinum Toxin also plays an important role in treating TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Disorders, as it helps reduce the hyperactivity of various affected facial muscles.

TMJ Disorders often cause complex muscle involvement, leading to constant facial muscle fatigue or continuous muscle spasms. A stuffed or clogged ear sensation can also occur due to the spasm of muscles surrounding the Eustachian tube.

Fillers

Dermal fillers, also known as soft tissue fillers, are substances injected beneath the skin’s surface to add volume and fullness.

Common substances used in dermal fillers include:

  • Calcium hydroxylapatite – a mineral-like compound found in bones.

  • Hyaluronic acid – naturally present in body tissues and fluids, helps add plumpness to the skin.

  • Polyalkylimide – a transparent, biocompatible gel.

  • Polylactic acidstimulates collagen production for natural rejuvenation.

  • Polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA) – a semi-permanent filler offering long-lasting effects.

Key Differences Between Botulinum Toxin and Dermal Fillers

  • Botulinum Toxin: Works by freezing muscles to stop creases and wrinkles caused by facial expressions. Commonly used on the upper face, such as the forehead and around the eyes.

  • Dermal Fillers: Contain hyaluronic acid or similar substances that add volume and smooth out wrinkles. Used for areas that have lost fullness, like cheeks, lips, and wrinkles around the mouth. They can also be applied to forehead lines, scars, or areas needing extra volume.

Result Duration:

  • Botulinum Toxin: Lasts 3 to 4 months.

  • Dermal Fillers: Duration varies depending on the type of filler used.

Jaw Sculpting

Jaw Sculpting is a procedure aimed at creating a well-defined jawline that complements an individual’s facial structure. It can be performed using Botulinum Toxin injections, Fillers, or Silicone Chin and Mandibular Angle Implants.

For instance, some individuals develop a bulky Masseter Muscle due to teeth grinding habits, resulting in a square-shaped face. In such cases, Botulinum Toxin injections help relax the Masseter Muscle, giving the face a more oval and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Jaw Sculpting is a non-invasive and popular cosmetic technique, often preferred by actors and actresses to enhance their facial profile and achieve a more defined look.
